KK: How long have you been living in Hong Kong and how is it different to where you moved from?

GFPC: Having moved from Mumbai, India, Hong Kong has been home for six glorious years. The pulse of both the cities is similar in terms of embracing new ideas and being appreciative of new talent though I must admit Hong Kong is far more cosmopolitan in its outlook.

KK: You had been working for years in the corporate sector for Big MNC’s like American Express. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

GFPC: I essentially come from a business background and I guess it was somehow in my veins that I would one day have my own set up. However I needed real time experiences in customer service to better equip myself in handling all sorts of temperaments. I worked graveyard shifts for the longest time giving me very minimal returns and that’s when I realized that if I put in the same amount of effort and time doing something I was passionate about, it would take me places. It’s a different high to see your dream shape up into reality.

KK: For other women who also dream to become an entrepreneur one day, what is the best advice on how to get started?

GFPC: The biggest advice I’d like to share is to nip procrastination in the bud. If you keep waiting for the right moment, you will never truly start and lastly, you’re never too young or old to pursue something you love with all your heart. There will always be competition in whatever field you choose, but the way you function and the skills you bring to the table will set you apart from your contemporaries.

KK: Who is your female role model and what did you learn from her?

GFPC: I’ve been intrigued by almost everyone I’ve ever come across. From a professional who chose to be a stay at home mum, I’ve learnt to embrace change, from a helper who does fantastic hairstyles, I’ve learnt to never let go of your passion and from professionals to always keep evolving or else you’d be stereotyped.

KK: Could you give our female readers three makeup tips they need to follow on a daily basis?

GFPC: I can’t stress enough on the importance of investing in a great skincare routine and being religious with it. Serum, eye cream and lip balm are a must to relieve tiredness off the face. It’s also imperative to use a gentle scrub on the face and neck twice a week followed by a skin suitable face mask to lay a good foundation for great makeup. Instead of hoarding the latest make up, make sensible choices of picking up products that have multi uses such as eyebrow pomades that double up as shadows for that sultry smokey eye or rouge that can be used for a flush of color on the cheeks and to bring out that pout.

KK:What would be the two most important things in make up that women need to carry in their purse anytime and anywhere?

GFPC: A pot rouge for lips and cheeks such as the one by Bobbi Brown for that instant pick me up and a great Eyeshadow Quad to turn tiredness into exotic glam are my go to’s for days where you’re rushing against time.

KK: As the festivities are approaching soon, any exciting promotions for Kit Kat Events & marketing Subscribers?

GFPC: We at Glamfacesbypearlychhabra are happy to announce a flat 20% on makeup and hair services for the month of December to all the wonderful readers. Wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

KK: When did you first move to SG and where did you move from?
KS: To be specific – on 7th September 2005, from Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

KK: What was your first impression about SG? Still the same?
KS: A well planned city with very impressive infrastructure and landscape where I didn’t have to lock the front door! SG is getting better, each time in every aspect, hence 13 years in the country!

KK: How did you become involved with running yacht charters? What makes it so much fun?
KS: I was in HR for 13 years. After moving to SG, I headed HR for a start-up. One year into the role, I wanted to take a sabbatical, but I was offered a marketing role for newly arrived trimaran yacht. I found the chartering of yachts very interesting and took up the offer instantly. The best part about being in this industry is the people we meet and the services we offer. Every client is different and so are their requirements, that makes work interesting. The fleet has grown from just one yacht to more than 50 yachts hence our nickname the ‘Grandma’ of the industry.

KK: You have been actively involved with many social causes from wildlife rescue, to dog shelter, running cross city marathons and helping distressed children. What’s the latest project you are helping with?
KS: Currently I am helping an NGO “Sa Ni Sa” that empowers under privileged women by providing them jobs, income and education for the rural children. I am promoting/ selling their food product, a healthy snack that is handmade, in Singapore and Malaysia.

KK: What advice would you give for most of us who struggle with managing time to be able to do so many things like you?
KS: I would like to quote unquote “It’s the Will not the Skill”. Prioritize, make your do-to-lists and get cracking. Magic will unfold and you will realize your dream.

KK: What is the one thing people don’t know about you?
KS: I work like a Captain and Play like a Pirate !! (Laughs)

KK: Are you offering any special promotions for our readers?
KS: Yes absolutely! We would like to offer a SGD100 off for your readers when they book a yacht in their birthday month. They simply have to quote Promo Code: KITKAT.

Happy Sailing!!!!

GM: It is very easy to settle down in Singapore, since language is not an issue. But with the option of having help and a support system at home, it made easier for me to take that step forward.

KK: What’s your next upcoming project?

Gurpreet Sandhu

Occupation:
Travel Agent & Radio DJ

Passion:
Learn everything and do the impossible!

KK: How long have you been living in HK?
GS: I landed in 2003, the year of SARS. Hong Kong was in a position where everybody was panicked due to SARS and the economic situation was the lowest.

KK: The Indian community is not often represented in the local media… how did you get Desi Tadka on air?
GS:
Desi Tadka is the Home Affair department’s show, in other words it was the government who wanted to connect with local Indians. I was working on TV commercials when I was approached for it. For me it was like a dream come true! I went for a voice test, then after a week I got the good news. I was selected but was reminded to work really hard!

KK: Tell us about some of your favorite interviews and maybe one that did not go as well as planned?
RS: When I was new, the producers gave me the idea to call a local Indian personality who is a well-known Women’s Rights Activist. I was super happy to chat with her as she is a big name! But when I started talking about some serious topic, she began to talk so furiously, that we had to stop the recording many times. She was not too happy with the outcome and I was in deep trouble as well. After that recording, I learned a lot about how to approach sensitive issues and how one can be politically correct. It was a very good learning experience!

KK: How do you find time between your day job and being a radio personality by night?
GS: I travel a lot for my day job! Radio is something I love to do and it is just like my weekly medicine to get rid of the tiredness. Radio gives me a chance to interact with others without any boundaries, so it’s just like an extension to my daily life…..

KK: What tips do you have for ethnic minorities who want to follow their dreams but do not know Cantonese?
GS: Let your dreams give you loads of unrest so that you start chasing them! Language is not a barrier but is always better to learn more and more languages, so why not start with Cantonese? Let’s be world citizens, instead of just being a citizen of one part of the world!

Jasmine & Jamie Gripton (J & J)
Entrepreneurs
Owners of The Brightside

KK: You both started Nakd water while living in New Zealand. And now having moved back to Singapore, what prompted you have embarked on a new journey into the restaurant/bar business?

J & J: It’s always been a dream of mine to own a F&B outlet and the timing just felt right. So we went for it. That’s how we are – we see opportunities and we take them on head first.

KK: What are the challenges you faced while setting you the restaurant business in terms of venue sourcing/licenses etc?

J & J: The main challenge were less business and more personal. However licenses took time and also dealing with banks was a daunting task. Having said that we were pretty happy with the process overall. The main challenge has been for us as a family, was to manage our kids and to have work life balance in a very little time.

KK: Jasmine, you were born and brought in Singapore. And Jamie when did you first move to SG and from where?

J & J: I (Jamie) moved to Singapore in 2010 after I sold my recruitment business in the UK and was offered the opportunity to open up the Asia business for the company that bought it.

KK: When did the two of you meet? And what were you doing professionally at the time?

J & J:Jasmine and I met after I had been in Singapore only a week or so. I had started up a conversation with the bar manager at the hotel I was staying at and mentioned I had been involved with growing a drinks previously. He said he had a friend with a whisky business that could use some advice and so set up a meet two days later. That friend turned out to be Jasmine and immediately the spark was there and we fell in love quickly. 7 years, 3 children and a couple of businesses and we are still going strong.

KK: As I know you have three beautiful children how do you manage your time between your family and running the restaurant?

J & J: We are finding it much harder than we had imagined being away from the kids, however as parents we have to make hard decisions to provide them with a better future. To our luck we have an awesome at The Brightside, we often sneak off home early to see the kids. As our business grows we hope to be able to delegate many of the things we do right now and get more quality time together.

KK: What are your future plans for the restaurant in terms of scaling up the business to the next level?

J & J: We plan to open several more outlets next year. I can’t say too much but watch this space.

KK: Tell us a secret most people don’t know about you?

J & J: It’s not a secret as I (Jamie) get told everyday but most people don’t know that I look a lot like Jack Black, the movie star. And Jasmine biggest dream is to become a Masterchef.

KK: On a lighter note, do you have any Christmas or New Year’s plan for yourself?

J & J: The saying goes ” no rest for the wicked” …hahahha. Christmas Eve will be our Christmas Day and we will be working over the whole festive period. We love working at The Brightside so it’s all good!

Yet with my hard work and perseverance over the last 5 years, I managed to exp and my business to 8 different countries and gearing to gradually capture the other potential markets.

KK: How would you compare the real estate market in Singapore vis-à-vis Indian real estate market in terms of investment?
NP:Though Singapore is great place to invest, but for an expat it can be an expensive proposition, given higher cost of stamp duty, taxes etc.  Indian real estate market on the other h and, is quite bullish and with government initiatives it’s far more lucrative for NRIs (Non Residents Indians) to invest in India. And our job as a consultant is to help people find good investment deals. We have a show coming up on the 28th & 29th of Oct at Park Royal Hotel and we hope to see your readers there..

KK: How easy or difficult it was to settle down in SG and please recommend some tips to keep in mind for our New Expats?
NP: Initially it took me time to settle down. But with my beloved husb and and great friends Singapore became home in no time.
My recommendation to New Expats……. well there are no short cuts to success. So work hard, play hard, make friends, ask for help and explore places in and around Singapore.

KK: Tell us a secret most people don’t know about you?
NP: Secret hmmm…. Let me think –  I am a trained Kathak Dancer, I cook very well (many people think I can’t cook to save my life ..hahahah) and I am a super homely person. At the end of the day I just want to be back home with my family.

KK: Thank you Namrata for the c andid talk. Good luck for your upcoming shows!!!

KK: How long have you been living in HK?

NM:  I moved to Hong Kong in 1995 from Bombay.

KK: Whats’ your professional background?

NM:  I have a Bachelors degree in Economics and a Diploma in Marketing Management. After being in Bombay for 20 years, I came to Hong Kong in pursuit of an Information Technology business. After running it successfully for 12 years, I went into semi-retirement. But realized it was too premature for me and hence I started my corporate services company.

KK: Is it hard for Expats to find jobs, if they don’t come here with one? Are there any tips you can share?

NM:  Firstly, there is this language barrier that st ands between very good talent and an employment opportunity. But there are certain careers such as information technology and accountancy that can cut across certain barriers. A lot of women have found teaching to be very lucrative as well.

KK: You have dedicated your life to music. What’s your opinion of the music scene in HK?

NM:  There is a lot of good local talent in Hong Kong when it comes to music. But in terms of performance, I still find a lack of enthusiastic response for anything which eludes to be classical. But we are still optimistic that there will be a good reception towards quality music.

KK: So tell us what is the one thing you dislike about HK and what is something you absolutely love about this city?

NM:  The cost of living in Hong Kong is really a big challenge. But setting that aside, the respect the city has for the common man is immense. Whenever there is any flexibility in the law, it is in favor of the citizen. And that’s what I love about this country amongst all other things it has to offer.
